Nathan Fitzjohn - Project Lead (South/East)
For 22 years, I lived a life entrenched in the world of drug dealing. During this time, I developed drug-induced psychosis, which manifested in severe paranoia and delusional episodes. My life took a drastic turn when, during one of these episodes, I was apprehended by the police and subsequently sentenced to six years in prison.
While incarcerated, I made a conscious decision to stay respectful and out of trouble. This approach served me well, and during my last 2 years in jail, I found a new purpose. I began working in the education department as an orderly, assisting fellow inmates with their Maths and English skills, and helping them secure suitable jobs. This role was not only fulfilling, but also ignited a passion within me for education and rehabilitation.
Eventually, I took on the position of the “Unlock My Life” orderly, a role that has profoundly impacted my life. I am incredibly proud to be involved with such a special project. My passion for educating and raising awareness among prisoners stems from my own lived experiences. This unique perspective allows me to connect with those I work with on a deeper level, fostering understanding and trust.
It is my mission to make a positive impact and support others in their journey towards better mental health and personal growth. By sharing my story and using my experiences, I aim to inspire and guide others towards a brighter future.
